This gaze holds you. Ears pricked high, mouth open, tongue glowing – a Dobermann, watchful and full of warmth at once, steps out of the darkness straight towards you.
Brilliant blue shapes the head and chest, white highlights lie on the forehead and muzzle. Cadmium yellow traces the brows and jowls, quinacridone magenta glows in the ears and on the tongue, and a silver spiked collar flashes around the neck. All around, gestural black with grey and white traces, a hall of suggested pillars and struts – and in all three colours the paint runs down to the floor in long streaks. The colour names come from the pigments with which David paints his originals.
